The Brookings-Harbor High School boys soccer team retained the lone spot on top of the Far West League (FWL) standings with a 2-0 victory over the Coquille Red Devils. The first goal came with 16:50 remaining in the first half, when Thomas Spratt was able to put the ball in the net. The Bruins kept the one-point lead going into the break at halftime, and came out to score one more in the second half to take the win.
Tyler Snow scored the second goal for the Bruins after Luis Rodriguez sent a cross pass his way. “It was a perfect cross,” Snow said. “We played really good.” The Red Devils had one opportunity to score early in the first half after a Bruin penalty in the box set up a penalty kick. The Coquille shooter kicked the ball and senior goalie Chandler Gotfried made the save to rob the Red Devils of a possible score and momentum builder. The Bruins shot on goal 14 times in the first half but were unable to shoot more than once in the second half. The Bruin defense only allowed eight shots on goal in the first half, and allowed six shots on goal in the second. “It was great,” Head Coach Pancho Garcia said. “We won.” Garcia added that the Red Devils came in tough, and the team was lucky to come out with the win. “It was a great effort by the Bruins,” he said. The Bruins are currently 6-0-1 and have a two-point lead over the Bulldogs of Sutherlin in the FWL. They travel to face North Bend on Monday. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
