To date, the Brookings-Harbor High School boys soccer team has outscored its league opponents 35-8. The team has been held to less than three points on only two occasions – both ties: a 1-1 knotting against Sutherlin and a 0-0 effort against North Bend.

The team kept up its high-scoring antics on Wednesday as they shut out the Trojans of Douglas, 6-0.

The Bruins outshot the Trojans 24-7 for the game, and were able to keep the ball in the Trojans’ backfield for the majority of the time – even when the bench players were seeing some time on the field.

Senior Tyler Snow got the scoring started in the 13th minute of the game when he took a pass from fellow senior Thomas Spratt and put it in the goal.

Thirteen minutes later junior Alan Anaya placed a cross pass directly in front of senior Nick Corpening who put the easy boot on the ball to put the Bruins up by two.

In the 30th minute Spratt took goalkeeper Chandler Gotfried’s clearing kick from the mid-field line and dribbled to the 12-yard line, took a shot and scored, only to have the goal overturned on a penalty call by the officials.

The third and final goal of the first half came when Anaya placed a cross from left to right to Wyatt Aldrich who kicked the ball into the goal.

Aldrich’s kick was so hard that even though the goalie got his hands on the ball it kept going into the net.

The first half also saw the Bruin goalie and defense preserve a shutout as Gotfried made four goal saves including an impressive second effort save.

After a Douglas striker broke through the defense on a free kick and took a shot on goal, Gotfried dove to stop the shot and came up just short. As the ball bounced off the far post and back into play Gotfried got to his feet and made it across the net to ensure the Trojans didn’t score on the rebound.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with the Bruins scoring at the 18-, 26- and 30-minute marks.

Anaya finally got a goal instead of an assist when he shot a ball that caromed off the goalie’s face and bounced off the back of a Trojan defender to roll into the goal.

“It was weird, the way it went in,” Anaya said of his goal. “I’m glad to have scored, but as long as the team does good, I don’t care if I score.”

Anaya would play the role of assistant just eight minutes later as he streaked toward the Trojan’s goal and dished a short crossing pass to Spratt who simply had to redirect the ball toward the net to put the Bruins up 5-0.

The Bruins’ sixth and final goal came from the most unlikely of sources – full-time goalie Gotfried.

In order to give younger players a chance to gain game experience, Head Coach Pancho Garcia replaced some of the starting varsity squad with bench players.

“It’s important for younger players to get some playing time,” Garcia said. “It helps them mature on the field.”

Because Gotfried’s position was taken by backup goalkeeper Alex Garibay, he was able to play midfield and hunt for that most elusive of goalkeeper dreams: the goal.

In the 30th minute, Gotfried was able to score with a header on a free kick taken by David Joyce.

The ball floated across the front of Douglas’ goal and Gotfried leaned forward, put his head on the ball and sent it sharply into the back corner of the net so cleanly that the Trojan goalie never saw it go past.

“I think we played a great game,” Garcia said. “We had a lot of good passes, and good communication.”

The Bruins travel to Sutherlin on Tuesday for what will arguably be the most important game of the season, as a victory will seal up a Far West League championship for the Bruins.

The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Sutherlin High School.
