Both the boys and girls soccer teams for Brookings-Harbor High School took one step closer to Far West League (FWL) titles with victories on Tuesday night.

The boys team, with a 1-0 win against Sutherlin, is just one victory away from claiming the FWL title outright, and with a league leading record of 8-0-2 is poised on the brink of an undefeated season.

The girls squad laid a 10-0 shutout victory on the heads of the 2-6 Coquille Red Devils and remain securely in second place in the FWL as they hunt for a fifth straight league title.

In their second meeting of the season the Bruins controlled the flow of the game and had more shots on goal than went in, due to superb goal keeping by the Bulldog goalie.

“We had a lot of shots on goal,” Head Coach Pancho Garcia said. “We had the opportunities but they have a good goalkeeper.”

According to Garcia, the Bruins’ defense was outstanding and goalie Chandler Gotfried had some amazing saves to maintain the shutout.

“This was the game we needed to win, and the kids accomplished that,” he said. “Everyone was hustling and had great attitudes.”

Nick Corpening scored the Bruins’ lone goal on a break away pass from Gotfried that he was able to take, beat a couple Bulldog defenders and then get to before Sutherlin’s goalie could touch it to put it in for a notch in the point tally.

“We played excellent soccer,” Head Coach Fred Juarez said of the 10-0 result from Tuesday’s game. “We didn’t play bad in any part of the game. Passing, shooting and finishing were all perfect tonight.”

The Lady Bruins spread out the goals over two halves with five in each half and each of the scorers not scoring more than two goals each.

Jade Heredia, Hannah Goergen and Jamie Macken each scored two goals while Addy Fitzgerald, Crystal Rodriquez, Jessica Fernandez and Karlie Gonzalez added one apiece. Brianna Juarez, Bethanee Bottoms, Fitzgerald, and Gonzalez had assists in all but three of the Lady Bruins’ scores.

Macken joined the ranks of elite soccer players by “bending it like Beckham,” and scoring on a corner kick by curving the ball around the near post to score in upper corner of the far post.

“We are exactly where we need to be,” Juarez said of the teams’ play. “We came strong and we won.”

Both teams host teams from South Umpqua on Thursday, with the girls’ game scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow shortly after it ends.
