BRUINS VOLLEYBALL SQUAD TRUMPS PANTHERS 3-2

By Jef Hatch

With moments of both brilliance and frustration, the Brookings Harbor High volleyball team was able to prevail against McKinleyville High School with a 3-2.

In the best of a five-set match the Bruins dropped their first set 12-25, and then won set two (25-22), four (25-19) and five (15-12).

The Bruins actually led the final set 13-6 before the Panthers mounted a "too-little, too-late" comeback.

In the first set, the Lady Bruins came out looking sluggish and were simply not communicating with each other, causing a number of unforced errors as well as frustration among the players.

Reestablishing open lines of communication in the second set visibly helped the team work together and with fewer mistakes.

Coach Lori Cooper also made some great substitutions throughout the match, helping the Bruins to overcome communication errors.

Sophomore Nicole Watterson substituted into the game on a regular rotation for sophomore Shawna Cooper. Watterson had a number of kills and was instrumental in helping the Bruins win their match.

The rotation of front line players kept the Panthers disorganized as the Bruins continually drove the ball past the outstretched defenders hands and blocked shots point after point.

The Bruins volleyball team is set to open their home Far West League competition against the Bulldogs of North Bend on Thursday, Sept. 25.
