June 24, 2008 11:00 pm

A Bike and Hike the Wetland Edge of Lake Earl, led by Sandra Jerabek, M.S., will be from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday June 29.

Jerabek is a local naturalist with the Tolowa Dunes Stewards and has been studying Lake Earl for more than a decade. She is a founder of the Aleutian Goose Festival, and develops nature and heritage tourism programs.

Participants will bring their bikes, take a 4-mile guided ride along a gravel road to the wetland edge of Lake Earl, and learn about the history and ecology of California's largest coastal lagoon on the West Coast. Along the way will be forests, grassy meadows and a year-round beaver pond. The tour is family friendly. Individuals should wear appropriate clothing, bring water and insect repellent.

The group will meet at 1 p.m., at Lake Earl Wildlife Area Headquarters, 2591 Old Mill Rd., in Crescent City, Calif.

The event is sponsored by North Coast Redwood Interpretive Association, California Department of Fish and Game and California State Parks in collaboration with the Tolowa Dunes Stewards and California Coastal Commission's Whale Tail License Plate Grant Program.
