BHHS track and field sends 9 student-athletes to state championship

The Brookings-Harbor High School track and field team nabbed four league titles in a feverishly contested 4A-3 Far West League Championship meet this past Friday and Saturday at Siuslaw High School.

The victories not only mean a league championship but also earn athletes the right to compete at the OSAA 4A State Championships beginning Friday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

Sophie Landau won the league championship 400-meter race with a time of 59.27; the only time in the field to break the one minute mark. Landau holds the fifth best time in the state this year in the 400 and should contend for a medal at next week’s state tournament. She also qualified for 200-meter sprint with a second place finish at the district event.

Javelin thrower Ronnie Manley, who is currently ranked first in the OSAA 4A state rankings in the javelin, won the Far West league title with a throw of 173 feet and 6 inches, more than 11 feet better than second-place finisher Hunter Drops of Marshfield. He will likely be the favorite to take home a state championship in the javelin next week.

Hurdler Shaine Graham continued his dominant season as he took home league titles for both the 110-meter and 300 meter hurdles. His blazing fast times of 15.36 in the 110-meter race and 40.65 in the 300-meter hurdles were both personal bests. Graham holds the third best times in the 4A section this year for both races and will be a favorite to medal at next week’s state meet.

Bruin Gabe Brazelton finished second in the 400-meter race behind Siuslaw’s Jonathan Peterson to qualify for the state championship meet.

In addition to those individual accomplishments, two of the BHHS relay teams will be competing for a state title.

The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team of Colby Welch, Jade Heredia, Jordyn Keys and Landau took home a league championship, blowing away the competition with a mark of 4:13.59, nearly a second-and-a-half better than second place Sutherlin and only one second behind the BHHS school record.

“They flat out ran away with it,” said BHHS assistant coach Terry Axel. “It was exciting.”

The Bruin boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of Graham, Trent Bevan, Brazelton and David Joyce finished a mere 7-thousandths of a second ahead of Siuslaw to grab second place in the league meet and a earn a trip to Hayward Field.

According to Axel, the Far West League Championship meet exhibited how competitive the league was as a whole this season.

“It was so tightly contested that we had kids that didn’t qualify for state that would have qualified in any other year,” he said. “It was that tough of a district this year.”
