Submitted photo The Brookings-Harbor High School cross country teams, both boys and girls, took first place at the Myrtle Point Invitational and together brought home the overall team trophy as well.
The boys team was led by a fifth-place finish by Kyle Gordon, 19:08.5, and strong finishes by Ronnie Manley, 19:54.7, Shane Graham, 20:34.6, Sean Graham, 21:26.4 and Nick Ensley, 21:42.1.
“Shane ran an excellent race,” Head Coach Terry Axel said. “He has really improved this season.”
Dylan Hiller, 22:18.5, Zak Anderberg, 23:59.20 and Alec McBride, 24:35.4 also had fast times, according to Axel.
“The boys are in a good position to try and sneak into that second position at districts to go to state,” he said. “They’re constantly improving their times and getting better.”
The boys won the team competition with a score of 60, 12 points better than their nearest competitors – Myrtle Point.
The girls squad was championed by Shaylin Curtis who took first place overall with a time of 22:49.00.
The team also got help with a third-place finish by Brandi Rodgers, 24:11.00, who took a wrong turn that cost her approximately 15 seconds according to Axel.
“Brandi had a great race,” he said. “She would have taken second if she hadn’t made that turn.”
Jessica Fernandez finished in fourth place with a time of 24:22.9, and Mikaela George finished in seventh with a time of 26:57.7.
Mikaela Lea, 27:27.6, and Roxy Gothard, 28:12.00, rounded out the girls squad in 10th and 12th place respectively.
The girls top finishes allowed the team to finish with a score of 19, more than 30 points ahead of the second-place Myrtle Point team.
The Bruins will take the next week to prepare for the Far West League championships where they hope to qualify individuals and the teams for a berth in the state championships.
The girls’ run is scheduled for 12 p.m., followed by the boys’ run at 12:45 on Thursday, Oct. 27. The race will be run at Tugman State Park, 10 miles north of North Bend.
