The Azalea Middle School eighth grade volleyball team captured the championship at the Lion's Tournament at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay on Saturday, Oct. 13.

In the championship match, the Bruins defeated Thurston in three games (6-25, 25-19 and 15-4).

"These girls showed a great deal of poise for such a young group," Coach Karen Andreason said. "After getting crushed in the first game, they played with a great deal of heart and refused to quit."

The Bruins dropped the opening game of the championship match, but rallied back to win the final two games for the championship.

"Having so many different personalities on the team was irrelevant," Andreason said. "They played with a common goal and brought the championship back to Azalea for the second consecutive year."

Along with grabbing the championship trophy, the Bruins were also awarded the sportsmanship trophy.

Breanna Juarez led the Bruins with 25 points to go along with five saves and three assists.

Kambri Coleman had a big match at the net, recording six kills and four blocks to go with 20 points.

Heidi Aguirre had 18 points, eight assists and five saves while Nicole Frye added 20 points.
