Garage Sale Saturday madness starts as early as 6 a.m. today as hundreds of bargain hunters crisscross the Brookings-Harbor community visiting the record-breaking 118 garage sales listed on a special map in today’s issue.
And if the weather forecast is correct, it will be a lovely day to find great deals.
The Pilot does what it can to help bring lots of attention to Garage Sale Saturday, including some out-of-town advertising. We get calls all year long from folks who want to plan to be in Brookings on the sale days. (They are always the last Saturdays of September and April.)
Since combining all these sales into a single day was our idea, we would like to offer some requests and advice for making Garage Sale Saturday enjoyable:
•Honor the rules and requests of the sellers. If they set hours, stay within them. If they have areas roped off or covered, don’t go there. If there are signs that say don’t touch, prove that you can read.
•Honor their neighbors. Don’t park in front of someone’s driveway. Don’t start up a stereo or power tool under someone’s bedroom window before 10 a.m. Don’t walk across lawns and flower beds.
•Remember limits. Buying a two-bit item with a $20 bill can really short a one-time seller for change. Asking someone to take a buck for something marked for $10 goes beyond normal bartering. Be patient with a one-person operation suddenly swamped with a dozen customers.
•Be friendly. Going to sales is a wonderful way to meet new people, share stories, get new information, chat about current events, and generally get to know people.
Reach all of Brookings, Harbor, and Curry County with your items to sell.
