Protect yourself against smash-and-grabs

An annual, unwelcome trend of summertime has begun: Smash and grab vehicle burglaries.

The warm weather not only brings more locals and tourists to our local beaches, trailheads and pullouts, it attracts thieves looking for easy opportunities to break into vehicles and steal property.

A number of such crimes have already been reported in Curry County, at pullouts along Highway 101 and up the Chetco River.

For thieves, miles of highway with many vehicles, often loaded with cameras, purses and other valuables, is just too good to pass up. Leaving valuables in plain sight is just asking for trouble.

Local authorities offer a variety of tips to prevent smash and grabs:

•First, never leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle.

•Do some cleaning in your vehicle and remove any unnecessary items.

•Before leaving your home, take all items out of your glove box and center console, put them in a bag and store it in your trunk.

•Do not wait until you park before storing property in your trunk – you never know who may be watching.

•Once you park at your favorite beach access parking area, open the glove box and center console so anyone looking in will see that there is nothing in the car worth breaking in for.

•Report to law enforcement any suspicious individuals you see loitering in parking areas.

One person we know never leaves valuables in his vehicle and leaves it unlocked, to avoid a smashed window. Now there’s an idea!

Summer is a great time to enjoy the Southernā€ˆOregon Coast. Take these simple precautions and help keep a complete stranger from ruining the experience.
