The special Curry County Citizens’ Committee meets for the first time today, in an all-day session aimed at walking the volunteers through the fiscal crisis that’s coming in our direction. We wish them luck, but we don’t believe they will find any “silver bullet” kind of solution.
Meanwhile, the Pilot’s series of special reports on the county’s budget situation has covered how we got here and the problems facing a few of the most obvious solutions: continued federal payments, higher property taxes, further cuts to the budget, and finding other revenues.

After watching the late-night newscasts, checking major news websites and reading the Curry Coastal Pilot, we understand how easy it is to think that everything is doom and gloom. It is, unfortunately, human nature to be more attracted to bad news.
However, as the holidays approach, there is no end to good news in the Pilot, if you’re looking for it. Here are some reminders about the encouraging events and news that we’ve reported in the past few weeks.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a day for people to enjoy an extended weekend, visit family and friends and gorge themselves with turkey and all the fixins. It’s also a time when people express their thankfulness for all the blessings in their lives.
As a community, Curry County has many things to be thankful for. We should all take a moment tomorrow to remember and give thanks to those in our community who make it the great place that it is.

Washington voters decided last week to kick their state out of the liquor business. That’s progress. Oregon voters should get the chance to do the same.
The issue is not about eliminating liquor taxes or halting liquor regulation. Oregon should regulate liquor, not be in the liquor business.
