Headlines warned of county’s crisis

 

There are still those who claim surprise by Curry County’s fiscal crisis, or who believe “no one did anything.” As we were preparing the 2011 Year in Review section (coming in Saturday’s edition) we gathered some Pilot’s headlines, just from the front pages of 2011. 

January: “Budget cuts loom for most county departments,” “Budgeting with less cash priority for county board,” “Sheriff: Budget cuts equal big consequences,” and “County mulls merger of services with health district.”

February: “Ex-commissioner to give ‘county in crisis’ talk,” “President’s budget keeps funding for Curry County,” and “County hopes to pay deputies using road funds.”

Small town, big heart

 Brookings-Harbor may be a small community, but the hearts of its residents are gigantic, especially when it comes to celebrating the holidays and thinking of others.

To name a few:

Volunteers again have transformed Azalea Park into a holiday wonderland featuring thousands of colored lights and decorated sculptures. The show closes Dec. 24. Don’t miss it!

Curry County stories create attention

 

The special Curry County Citizens’ Committee meets for the first time today, in an all-day session aimed at walking the volunteers through the fiscal crisis that’s coming in our direction. We wish them luck, but we don’t believe they will find any “silver bullet” kind of solution.

Meanwhile, the Pilot’s series of special reports on the county’s budget situation has covered how we got here and the problems facing a few of the most obvious solutions: continued federal payments, higher property taxes, further cuts to the budget, and finding other revenues.

There’s good news too, if you pay attention

 

After watching the late-night newscasts, checking major news websites and reading the Curry Coastal Pilot, we understand how easy it is to think that everything is doom and gloom. It is, unfortunately, human nature to be more attracted to bad news.

However, as the holidays approach, there is no end to good news in the Pilot, if you’re looking for it. Here are some reminders about the encouraging events and news that we’ve reported in the past few weeks.
