Need commitment from all to improve schools

The school year begins Tuesday and many parents once again will place their trust in a public school system still struggling to mold children into happy, well-educated contributing citizens.

Despite the best efforts of principals, teachers and administrators, many of our young people are not getting what they need from school – and it’s not just a matter of a lack of money.

To improve things, it will take a commitment from everyone.

Students: Demand more from your teachers and parents and don’t let anyone tell you you’re not college material or have what it takes to make it in the working world. Let the school and district officials know you expect to graduate from high school.

Teachers: You are on the front lines and know just how challenging the situation is. Keep up the good work and maintain a positive attitude and be a leading voice for your students.

Parents: Get involved in any way you can – despite your busy schedules. Your responsibility for their education doesn’t end when they hit puberty.

School administrators: Don’t lose sight of your least-advantaged students in your district. Do whatever it takes to ensure all students have access to high-quality options and a shot at college or post-education employment.

Business owners: We applaud business owners who continue to contributed time, labor and dollars to support our schools. After all, the long-term success of any and all businesses depends on a good education system. Let your needs and expectations be known. Stress your need for high standards and partner with the school district to get there.

Citizens: Schools are always in need of volunteers – people to fill in the gaps at schools by helping in the office, the classroom or on the playground. Call a school and ask where you can help.

Let’s all pull together. Our children’s education depends on it.
