If there is any event worthy of community support, it’s the Curry County Fair – where the spotlight shines on local accomplishments, ingenuity and creativity.

It’s spread out over four days, starting Thursday, there’s no excuse not to go. They have racing pigs and a Pirate’s Parrot show! Not to mention a Diaper Derby (babies in a crawling race).

Aside from the professional acts  such as the rodeo and the motor sports, so the fair offers visitors a variety of locally made arts and crafts, photographs, displays, 4-H animals, live local music and demonstrations.

One walk through any of the display areas will prove that Curry County residents of all ages are a talented bunch.

Unlike larger, more “city-fied” county and state fairs, which tend to focus on commercial vendors and second-rate entertainment headliners, our fair is as close to a good old-fashioned fair as one will find these days – and you can’t beat the seaside location.

People still take pie and rabbit judging seriously. Visitors enjoy the many outstanding floral and vegetable displays. Contestants compete in talent shows, ugly dog and beautiful baby contests, and a grill-off. Balloon clowns, jugglers and Hula-Hoop acrobats delight and involve the audiences in their acts.

Best of all, the fair is still a relatively cheap form of entertainment for the entire family. Adults get in for $7. Children younger than 6 get in free. Children older than 6 get in for $2. On Friday, all children are admitted free.

But wait! There’s more!

On Thursday, seniors get in for $3. On Sunday, families get in for $15. A four-day pass is $20. Unlimited carnival rides are available to those who buy $28 wrist bands ($20 if purchased in advance).

This year’s fair theme is “When Pigs & Parrots Fly.” So soar on over to the fair and have a good time.

Not only will be you supporting your community, but you can enjoy some cotton candy and a corn dog, too!
