Health care reform: Separating lies from facts

There’s an old proverb that says a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still getting its boots on. This surely seems to be the case with all the misinformation going around in the current debate about health care.

For example, recent reports from NBC and the Wall Street Journal showed that a majority of people surveyed believe that the current health care proposal will provide insurance to illegal immigrants. In fact, no bill says this, and a key House bill explicitly forbids it.

Some letter writers have said that to save costs Medicare beneficiaries would face rationing of care. In fact, our current health care services are rationed. People with insurance these days will find that most companies don’t cover everything, and those that do, it is only up to a point.

AARP, the leading advocate for seniors, has stated that none of the health care reform proposals being considered by Congress would cut Medicare benefits or increase out-of-pocket costs for Medicare services. In fact, most of the proposals being discussed will lower prescription drug costs for people with Medicare Part D by closing the “doughnut hole.”

Most of us can take issues with some aspects of the proposed legislation. However, it is up to each one of us to make an effort to understand  what the facts are rather than simply parroting what we hear on TV news, talk radio and the Internet.
