Earthquakes and floods. Vehicle breakdown. Getting lost in the woods. These are just a few of the unexpected situations that can happen to residents living along Oregon’s rural South Coast – not just in winter but all year round.
Chances are, we’re not all going to be at home when disaster strikes. What can you do?
Emergency experts recommend creating a “Disaster Go Bag” that contains all of the essentials survival items for each person in your family. It’s no bigger than the backpacks that elementary school kids lug to and from home every day. Such a backpack or bag can be stored in the trunk of your car or by the front door of your residence. And the food, clothing, first aid and other items it contains need not be expensive.
Disaster supplies range from an AM/FM radio with batteries or a hand crank, to ponchos and rain suits, to mylar blankets, glow sticks and waterproof matches. Food can consist of a handful of energy bars to Meals Ready to Eat (MREs).
Water is essential and bottles and water purification tablets are important.
Another essential item is a plan: Where family members should meet in case of a disaster. Do you have a place to meet? Do you have a back-up place?
If the answer is “no” chances are, some preparation is needed.
The Pilot encourages every resident to be ready. In case of an emergency, one of the best things a person can do is to take care oneself, and not become a burden to others.
