Don’t be an easy target

We continue to hear police reports of smash-and-grab vehicle burglaries up and down our coast.

Summertime not only brings more locals and tourists to our local beaches, trailheads and pullouts, it attracts theives looking for easy opportunities to break into vehicles and steal property.

For thieves, miles of highway with large numbers of vehicles often loaded with cameras, purses and other valuables is just too good to pass up. Leaving valuables in plain sight is just asking for trouble.

Local authorities offer a variety of tips to prevent smash and grabs:

•First, never leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle.

•Clean your vehicles and remove any unnecessary items.

•Before leaving your home, take all items out of your glove box and center console, put them in a bag and store it in your trunk. Do not wait until you park before doing this – you never know who may be watching. Once you park at your favorite beach access parking area, open the glove box and center console so anyone looking in will see that there is nothing in the car worth breaking in for.

•Report any suspicious individuals you see loitering in parking areas to law enforcement.

Some people go so far as  to remove all valuables in a vehicle and leaves it unlocked, to avoid a smashed window and subsequent replacement cost.

Summer is a great time to enjoy the Southern Oregon Coast. Take these simple precaution and help keep a complete stranger from ruining the experience.
