Some of our readers will be glad to learn that the Curry Coastal Pilot will soon wrap up its series of reports on Curry County and it’s financial woes.

In fact, one reader said, “Enough, already!” following the fourth story in the series.

Another said, “You’re not telling us anything we don’t already know” and suggested we put the “bad news” stories deeper in the paper.

One reader went so far as to say, “These articles appear designed to create fear, unrest and anxiety.”

We’ve also received encouraging reader comments such as “Wow! I didn’t know things were this bad” and “Thanks for putting all the pieces together so I can see the big picture.”

The series has spurred a number of letters to the editor, especially the story looking at alternative ways to generate money for the county. Of particularly concern is the option to increase property taxes – a touchy subject to be sure. Some readers rejected that option outright, while others supported it.

That type of community dialogue is one of the main reasons for doing the series: to get people thinking and talking about this serious situation.

Our intent is not to panic Curry County residents, but to summarize years of information, history, facts and potential solutions into an easy-to-read-and-understand package that readers could use to make up their own minds on what could or should be done.

We have made an effort to educate and inform our readers about this difficult subject. And we will continue to do so as the story unfolds.

One thing we know for sure is, if nothing changes, it will be about this time next year when Curry County government runs out of money.

What happens then is anybody’s guess.
