Avoid summertime smash and grabs

With a rash of new smash and grab vehicle burglaries reported throughout Curry County last week, we felt it prudent to reiterate information that might thwart such crimes.

Summer not only brings more locals and tourists to our beaches, trailheads and pullouts, it attracts thieves looking for easy opportunities to break into vehicles and steal property.

Many of these crimes happen at pullouts along Highway 101, parking lots at various beaches and along the Chetco, Rogue and Winchuck rivers.

For thieves, miles of highway with large number of vehicles often loaded with cameras, purses and other valuables is just too good to pass up. Leaving valuables in plain sight is just asking for trouble.

Local authorities offer a variety of tips to prevent such crimes:

•First, never leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle.

•Do some spring cleaning in your vehicle and remove any unnecessary items.

•Before leaving your home, take all items out of your glove box and center console, put them in a bag and store it in your trunk.

•Do not wait until you park before storing property in your trunk – you never know who may be watching.

•Once you park at your favorite beach access parking area, open the glove box and center console so anyone looking in will see that there is nothing in the car worth breaking in for.

•Report any suspicious individuals you see loitering in parking areas to law enforcement.

One person we know never leaves valuables in his vehicle and leaves it unlocked, to avoid a smashed window (and the cost to replace it).

Summer is a great time to enjoy the Southernā€ˆOregon Coast. Take these simple precaution and help keep criminals from ruining the experience.
