Because some of the following items involve Friday, before the next issue of the Curry Coastal Pilot, I felt I should update you on several Brookings-Harbor reactions to Tuesday's tragedies.
There are growing encouragements to display the American flag in a show of support and unity, particularly on Friday, Sept. 14.
To make certain every household has a flag to display during this time, the Curry Coastal Pilot is publishing a special paper flag in our Saturday, Sept. 15, edition; proceeds from more than 120 sponsors will be funneled to relief agencies.
The city of Brookings is hosting a special memorial service at noon Friday, Sept. 14.
In addition, a suggestion is growing nationwide that Americans step outside and light a candle at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in a show of unity.
Chetco Federal Credit Union has established a Disaster Relief Fund, Account 911, to funnel donations to relief agencies.
Any branch of U.S. Bank is also collecting donations for donation to the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Curry County later this month. Sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Gold Beach High School and Thurday and Friday, Sept. 27-28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookings. Call the Red Cross for an appointment; toll free at 1-800-792-5682.
The airport at Brookings, operated by Curry County, is still closed as of Thursday afternoon, with no word on when it can re-open.
The athletic activities at Brookings-Harbor High School are continuing as planned, including Girls Soccer today at 4 p.m., varsity football Friday at 7 p.m., and boys soccer Saturday, with the time to be announced. The updated schedule of BHHS events is being posted on The Pilot's Web site daily at http://www.currypilot.com under "Schedules and Activities."
The newsroom staff continues to gather as many connections and announcements about the community's response to the tragedies for publication in the Saturday edition of The Pilot. Please call them at (541)469-3123 if you have anything to contribute.
