William Guy Durrell

William Guy Durrell, 87, Brookings, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, in Coos Bay at a care facility.

He was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Taunton, Mass., to Guy Melcher and Margaret Durrell. His father died when Bill was 9 and he left school at the end of the eighth grade to work for the family. As a teen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and traveled the East Coast extensively.

He married Marian Leach, Oct. 17, 1937, in Whitman, Mass.

He worked most of his life for Walter Baker Chocolate Factory-General Foods as a chocolate sampling technician, retiring in 1977.

He followed daughter Linda and her family to Sacramento and then to Brookings in 1978.

Mr. Durrell was an avid reader, liked to study and was active in senior citizen issues. He enjoyed garage sales, sports on TV and frequented the local McDonald's as his daily breakfast spot. He was a member of Grace Bible Church and donated many volumes of scriptures to others.

Survivors include his wife of Brookings; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Eller of Brookings; grandchildren, Kevin and wife, Barbara Eller of Medford; Lynette and husband, Jose Hernandez; Jill and husband, Julio Cesar Zebadua, all of Brookings; and Nathan and wife, Chandra Eller of Salem.

Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy Durrell; sister, Mary Durrell; and son, William Guy Durrell Jr.

A memorial service will be at Grace Bible Church Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
