William Canet Jr., 72, died Aug. 4, 2001, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.

He was born May 18, 1929, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., a member of the Pioneer Canet family, originating in Chorro Creek and branching out to Cayucos and Avila Beach.

Mr. Canet graduated from San Luis High School in 1946, and attended Cal Poly before joining the Air Force, where he saw tours of duty in Europe and Asia. After his retirement from the Air Force in 1971, he and his wife, Thelma, owned and operated the Red Cove Sporting Goods Bait and Tackle Store in Oregon. He also worked at Diablo Canyon as a Security Guard.

He was active with the Elks Club in Oregon and other philanthropic organizations. He taught gun safety in Oregon and was involved in youth baseball.

Survivors are stepchildren, Carl Jan and William of Oregon, five step-grandchildren, and cousins George and Dottie Rhodes of San Luis Obispo, and Marjorie Smith of Newbury Springs.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today (Aug. 15) at San Luis Cemetery. Deacon Dave Leach will officiate the service.
