Ward Wayne Hughes, 90, Brookings, died Oct. 12, 2000.
He was born July 5, 1910, in Weatherford, Texas, to Claude and Lena Hughes.
He moved with his parents to Sommerton, Ariz., when he was 8 years old. They then moved to Colton, Calif., where he lived for many years.
He met his wife Wilma McNurtrey in Brownwood, Texas, where he was on an assignment for his company, Concrete Conduit.
They married in Brownwood on June 2, 1939, and made their home in Colton, Calif.
Mr. Hughes worked for Concrete Conduit Co. for 43 years before retiring as vice-president of the company.
He was president of the Colton Rotary Club and the chamber of commerce. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and active in community affairs.
His hobbies were golf and coin collecting. He and his wife moved to Brookings in 1994.
Survivors are his wife Wilma Hughes, Brookings; son Charles and daughter-in-law Lola; sister Ethel Meares, Boise, Idaho; grandson Tyler Hughes, Oregon.
Preceding him in death were his parents Claude and Lena Hughes and a daughter Jeanette.
Memorial services are planned for Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Brookings Presbyterian Church. Rev. Warren Muller will officiate.
