Walton E. Lovejoy, 78, Brookings, died April 11, 2001, in Brookings of Parkinsons Disease.
He was born July 5, 1922, to Frank and Emily (Rumford) Lovejoy, in Oakland, Calif.
He grew up in Oakland and attended Oakland schools.
He married Violet Ninness Jan. 10, 1943, in Seattle.
Mr. Lovejoy served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1941 to 1946 on the USS Menkar during his Pacific Theater duty.
He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ribbon with one bronze star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star.
Mr. Lovejoy worked as a carpenter, cabinet maker and general contractor in Santa Cruz, Calif. He retired in 1977 and moved to Brookings.
He enjoyed working with the Chetco Ranger District as a volunteer for several years.
He was a Brookings city councilor from 1980 to 1984 and he volunteered his services to the Brookings Harbor Garden Club and the Chetco Community Public Library.
Mr. Lovejoy was a 53-year member of Local 505, Santa Cruz. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, the National Wildlife Federation, the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy.
Survivors are his wife Violet Lovejoy of Brookings; daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Steve Cadwalader of Brookings; sons and daughters-in-law Bill and Sally Lovejoy of Santa Cruz, Calif.; Dan and Yolanda Lovejoy of Santa Cruz; grandsons Kaleb Cadwalader of Brookings; Jesse Lovejoy of San Diego, Calif.; Nick Lovejoy of Chico, Calif.; Ryan Lovejoy of Santa Cruz.; sister Margaret Binns of Lucerne, Calif.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews in California, Washington and Arizona.
At his request, services will not be held. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life April 15 at 1 p.m. at Ludlum House.
