Former Brookings resident Valeria Smith, 93, of Emmett, Idaho, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at an assisted living center in Emmett.

Val was born April 4, 1918, in Republic, Wash.

Following her graduation from high school she attended beauty college and worked as a beautician in Seattle. It was there during World War II that she met and married Charles Fulton Smith, a merchant marine who later became a commercial fisherman and harbor pilot for the city of Long Beach, Calif.

Following their retirement the Smiths relocated to Brookings. Val was a longtime member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings. Val relocated to Emmett in 2008 due to health issues and also to be closer to her daughter. She resided at Serenity Living.

Val became a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved to travel, and had been to many places, including Russia, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, and Alaska. She also  took and enjoyed several cruises.

Val is survived by two children: her daughter Kathleen Sanuy and husband John of Emmett; and her son Jeffery Smith and his wife Karen. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Coreen, Joshua and Riley Smith and a great-grandson.

Val was preceded in death by Charles, her husband of 45 years, who passed away in 1991.

She was a lovely, strong woman who instilled the spirit of adventure in all who knew her. She will be missed very much.

A vigil was held Feb. 14, in Emmett.

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, (Feb. 15), at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emmett.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery, 1035 Seventh St.,  in Brookings.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Heart ’n Home Hospice Care, 306 S. Washington Ave., Emmett, ID 83617.
