Ruth Payne, 83, Brookings, died April 7, 2001, in Brookings of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Bismarck, N.D., to John M. Johnson and Raynhild R. Johnson.
She grew up in Hamlet, N.D., Lake Park, Minn., and Troy, Mont.
She attended grade school in Lake Park. She graduated from high school in Troy, Mont., in 1936 and attended Cheney College in Cheney, Wash.
Mrs. Payne worked as a secretary at Buffalo Bills Dude Ranch in Cody, Wyo., before moving to Seattle in 1942.
She worked as a secretary for the Coast Guard in Seattle from 1942 to 1943.
She married Kenneth Payne Nov. 8, 1943, in Harbor.
They moved to Brookings in 1952 from John Day.
She worked at Upper Chetco School for 12 years as a school clerk and custodian. She later worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for the Brookings-Harbor School District.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and was involved in the local chapter for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Survivors are her son Channon Payne of Brussels, Belgium; daughter Anne Cameron of Houston, Texas.
Also surviving are two grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband; son Alan Payne and mother.
Services are scheduled for Sunday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 416 Azalea Park Road.
Rev. Dr. Gordon Myrah will officiate.
