Russ Walker, 69, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach.

He was born Feb. 20, 1943, the second of three sons, to Ralph F. Walker and Phyllis A. (Moore) Walker.

Russ grew up in Pistol River, graduated from high school in Gold Beach and earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Oregon State University.

Shortly after college he moved to Tigard and then the Wilsonville area. In addition to working a daytime job, for fun and then, as part of being self-employed, he traveled across the Western United States in parades with his black and white pinto stallion and silver saddle. This eventually grew into rodeo entertainment acts with his trick horse, dancing horses, and trick riding into a full re-creation of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

In 1990 he returned to Pistol River and a few years later opened the trail ride business Hawk’s Rest Ranch. Many thousands of people, locally, from across the United States and from many foreign countries, have enjoyed riding his horses on the family ranch and nearby beach for more than 15 years.

He is survived by his older brother Milt Walker of Pistol River; former wife Shirley Ben Walker of Wilsonville; children Angela Ramirez of Siletz, Heather Walker of Siletz, Brent Walker of Fortuna, Calif.; grandchildren Ashliegh Ramirez of Boston, Cristian Ramirez of Siletz; nephews Ron Walker and Rick Walker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his younger brother Leslie Walker.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Pistol River Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life gathering and potluck at the Pistol River Friendship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Over the Rainbow, 92611 Airport Road, Sixes, OR 97476, or the Pistol River Fire Department, 24686 Pistol River Loop, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Submitted by the family.
