He was born Feb. 5, 1937, in Butler, Pa., to Ralph Victor Mears and Helen Elizabeth Rush Mears. The family  lived there until 1948, when they moved to Sacramento, Calif.

On graduation day he joined the U.S. National Guard, working as a surveyor with the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In 1958, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1962.

While working for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 447 in Sacramento, Bob met and fell in love with his future wife, Betty Jean.

The couple wed in Reno, Nev., in January 1965, and settled in Citrus Heights, Calif. Bob continued working as a pipefitter and welder until 1989 when he joined the Department of Defense at McClellan Air Force Base.

Upon retiring in 2000, the couple moved to Harbor, where Bob enjoyed playing pool and spending time with his wonderful dog Duke.

Bob is survived by his wife Betty; daughter Tami Nugent and son-in-law Timothy; son Randy Brown and daughter-in-law Kristy; brother Jim Mears and his wife Gwen of Susanville, Calif.; sister Joan Conyers and her husband John of Rancho Cordova, Calif. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Jake Mears, mother Helen Elizabeth Rush Mears; brother Charles Mears.

His beloved dog Duke is survived by Bisky and Beau, who join Bob in requesting any memorial contributions be made in Bob’s name to South Coast Humane Society, P.O. Box 7833, Brookings, OR 97415.

At Bob’s request there will be no service.

Submitted by the family.
