Richard Dick E. Gallup, 81, Harbor, died March 29, 2001, at Curry Good Samaritan Center as a result of stroke complications.
He was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Grantsburg, Wis.
He graduated from high school in Eveleth, Minn., and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp when he was 20. He trained at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Ill., and was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno.
Mr. Gallup met his wife Claire Damiani in Fresno. Their first child was born while he was fighting the North African Campaign of World War II. He received a medical discharge as a disabled veteran.
He and his family lived in Fresno where he worked as a bus driver and bus mechanic. He learned the insurance business and retired from Argonaut Insurance in 1975.
He was an active member and past president of the Fresno Chapter of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, a fraternal organization of men and women who work in the property and insurance casualty industry.
He was also president of the Central California Adjustors Association in 1965 and chairman of the Arbitration Committee of Fresno in 1966.
He and his wife moved to Madras in the mid-1970s when she was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. She died and he moved to Brookings in the late 1980s.
Mr. Gallup and his former high school sweetheart, Eleanor Hauser, renewed their relationship during the 1992 Eveleth, Minn., Centennial Celebration. They lived for the last nine years in Brookings.
Survivors are companion Ellie Hauser of Brookings; sons and daughter-in-laws Richard and Jane Gallup of Costa Mesa, Calif.; Doug and Sue Gallup of Eugene; sister Doris Rommel of Seattle, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Melvin Mitchell of Estacada; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Nancy Gallup of Maple Grove, Minn.
Also surviving is his cat Missy of Brookings.
A memorial service will be today (April 4) at 10 a.m. at Littys Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel, 517 Railroad St. He will be buried in Madras.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimers Association, Cascade/Coast Chapter, 1238 Lincoln St., Eugene, OR 97401.
