Peter Carl Cowan Sr.

Peter Carl Cowan Sr., 73, Charleston, died Dec. 5, 2001, in Charleston.

He was born July 2, 1928, in North Bend.

Mr. Cowan spent his early years on the family farm and served in the armed forces during the Korean War.

He raised Easter lilies in Brookings for many years and received national recognition for excellence in the hybridizing of Oriental lilies.

After retirement, he made violins and left a legacy of 45 handmade violins.

Survivors include his companion, Luellen Swanson of Charleston; children, Pete Cowan Jr., David Cowan and Carla Doan all of Brookings, James Cowan of Aloha; and sister, Vi Heegel of Reedsport. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.

Mr. Cowans final resting place is in Scottsburg Cemetery near Scottsburg.
