Penny Curtis, 67, of Brookings, passed away peacefully Sept. 30, 2013, with family and friends at her side, at Rogue Valley Hospital in Medford.

Penny was born Jan. 20, 1946, in San Jose, Calif., to loving parents James and Virginia Hood.

Penny married Lee Curtis Sept. 13, 1985, in Reno, Nev. The two made their home in  Montague, Calif. While there, Penny ran and operated her own daycare center.

Penny loved children and children loved Penny and Lee just as much. Penny was well known for giving her time to help her neighbors. On top of the help, she also provided dozens of cookies and other foods over the years, the most famous being her clam chowder, which she shared with family and friends.

Penny’s dream was to live by the ocean and she especially loved Brookings. In 2002, when she and Lee sold their home in Montague, her dream came true. They lived in a small trailer right on the beach. Later, they moved to a mobile home park off Highway 101.

Lee passed away July 12, 2011, and Penny spent the last two years in the loyal company of her beloved dog Zoe, one of the many small dogs she befriended throughout her life. The two of them took walks

every day, rain or shine. Every morning Penny would visit and help her friend Fely at a local restaurant on the beach in Harbor. Her beloved dog Zoe now makes her home with Fely.

Penny leaves three sisters and a brother: Betty Phillips of Grenada, Bertha Rogers of Browns Valley, Calif., Beverly Ashby of Medford, and James Hood of San Diego. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lee; father James; mother Virginia; and sister Beryl.

Penny will be missed by many friends and family in Brookings and Montague.

At Penny’s request, no service will be held. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Lee at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point.

Submitted by the family.
