Mervin LeRoy Pettegrew
Mervin LeRoy Pettegrew
Mervin LeRoy Pettegrew passed away quietly early Sunday morning, June 2, 2013, at Rogue Valley Medical Center, of complications of cancer.

He was born July 26, 1942, in Medford, to Thelma Hanscam Pettegrew and Leland William Pettegrew.

The family moved to Coburg and lived there until 1949, when they took possession of the family ranch on the Winchuck River.

Growing up, Mervin worked at the ranch, at surrounding ranches and dairies, and at the family store, E.E. Hanscam’s and Sons. He attended local schools and graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School in 1960.

Mervin then worked at Brookings Plywood Corp. before joining the U.S. Navy in 1963.

While in the Navy Mervin flew long-range surveillance airplanes out of Moffett Field near the south end of San Francisco Bay.

After the service, Mervin worked for FMC Corp. as a mechanic and quality assurance inspector for the Bradley Tank and Troop Carrier Division in Palo Alto, Calif.

He returned to the Brookings area when FMC went out of business. He began driving trucks and becoming more involved in the family ranch.

Survivors include his children Cynthia, Greg and Jennifer; his extended family: stepdaughter Arlynda, her son Connor and daughter Kelsey; stepson Duane, his sons Bridger and Cooper. Also surviving are nieces, uncles, cousins and many more good friends, relatives, and loved ones.

Mervin was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother Vernon Lee; and sister JoAnne Pettegrew Crockett.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at Brookings Elks Lodge 1934, 800 Elk Drive. Everyone is invited and welcomed to remember this kind and much loved man.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made in Mervin’s name to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford OR 97501.

Submitted by the family.
