Merle Leroy Morfitt, 74, died Sept. 15, 2002, in Crescent City.
He was born Nov. 15, 1927, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Clyde and Della (Bly) Morfitt.
Mr. Morfitt attended Santa Barbara High School. While serving in the Navy during World War II, he married Virginia Rogers. She died seven years later after a short illness.
He was a lineman and installer at the telephone company in Santa Barbara for 35 years. Upon retiring, he moved to Smith River to enjoy his hobbies of fishing, crabbing and kayaking. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge for 22 years and held the position of treasurer for two years.
He is survived by daughters, Sheila Ybarra of Lompoc, Calif., and Lisa Meadows of Carpinteria, Calif.; one grandson and two granddaughters, two great grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Memorial services will be at the Brookings Elk Lodge Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
