Marvin Avery died at his home in Harbor on Sept. 5, 2011, at the age of 93.

He was born July 14, 1918, to Otis and Emma (Gronenthal) Avery of Glenburn, N.D., and grew up on the homestead farm.

He and his brother Kenneth bummed their way, riding freight trains to the Coast in 1936, and going through many states.

Then, in September 1941 Marvin joined the U.S. Army and served for three and a half years with all but six months overseas. He was honorably discharged in 1946 having earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He returned and married Rada Gail Poor in 1948; she preceded him in death after 38 years of marriage.

He had built a small trailer court before marriage. Later he sold that and he and his wife built a 50-space trailer court on land purchased from his father-in-law. In 1966 they purchased a cabin in Mexico near Ruby Point, commuting from the trailer court 220 miles, and being there usually every 10 days. They retired in 1969 at 46 years old, and came to Brookings.

After his wife’s death Marvin took a cruise to Australia and one to Alaska as well as traveling extensively in trailer campers and motor homes. He was a good fisherman and loved the sport. Marvin owned several boats in Harbor. Marvin also authored three books and was an accomplished poet.

Marvin leaves behind one brother, Charles Avery of Montana; two nephews in Washington; two nieces in Wisconsin; and three nieces and a nephew in Billings, Mont.; as well as Dee Bernhard, a loved friend and companion for years; and “Al” Yerma and Lisa Bernhard and their children Debbie, Karen and Linda whom he called his second family. At his request there will be no services, and he will be interred at Eagle Point National Cemetery beside his wife.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net
