Former Brookings resident Sylvia Simpson, 66, of Corvallis, died June, 23, 2011, in Corvallis. She was born July 15, 1944, in Camp White, to Richard and Shirley Barnes. Sylvia grew up in a military family with three sisters and a brother. She graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan. After graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso, she taught English, reading, science and life skills for more than 30 years in Pearland, Texas. After Sylvia retired from teaching in Texas, she returned to Oregon and taught life skills for more than six years at Azalea Middle School, in Brookings. After Sylvia’s retirement from teaching in Brookings, she moved to Eugene and spent time with her mother and siblings. Sylvia spent her remaining two years in Corvallis with her daughter. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed quilting and crafting. Her imagination and creativity were endless. Survivors include her daughter Catherine Simpson of Corvallis; son Rick Simpson of Pasadena, Texas; brother Jeff Barnes of Veneta; sisters Crystal Barnes of Eugene, Beth Barnes of Eugene, and Sunny Israelson of Juneau, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents. A service was scheduled for June 30 at Church of the Good Samaritan in Corvallis. Submitted by the family.
