Butch Herron, 71, of Brookings, passed away Oct. 6, 2011, at his home, after a battle with hemochromatosis. He was surrounded by his family. 

Butch was born May 19, 1940, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Dorothy and Leonard Herron Sr.

At age 15, Butch was the proud recipient of the Boy Scout’s God and Country Award. He graduated from Woodland High School in Woodland, Calif. 

He enlisted in the U.S. Army, 101 Airborne Division in December, 1958. He was honorably discharged in March 1962. 

Butch married Dianne Evans Jan. 9, 1960 in Woodland. 

He pursued a career in construction. After more than 30 years working in the Sacramento area he retired and relocated to Brookings. 

Butch enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with his family. He was active in the Moose Lodge and served twice as Exalted Ruler of Brookings Elks Lodge 1934.

Survivors include his wife Dianne; daughter Debby Phillips, husband Howie and their children Dustin and Brandon; daughter Tina Eszlinger, husband John and their children Eric, Kenneth, Cecilia and Jacob; daughter Robin LaThorpe, husband Michael and their children Ryan, Joseph and Kimberly; son Ty and his children Christelle and Tyler Ann;  great-grandchildren Kassidy and Emma Joe. Also surviving are his sister Betty Blankenship and brother Duane Simon along with numerous family members who loved him dearly.

A memorial service will be   at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Brookings-Harbor Christian Church, 777 Fifth St., in Brookings, followed by a memorial service and celebration of life at 1 p.m. at Brookings Elks Lodge 1934, 800 Elk Dr. Interment will be at Oretown Cemetery near Lincoln City, at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Butch’s honor at Umpqua Bank, 16271 Highway 101, in Brookings or mailed to P.O. Box 1820, Roseburg, OR 97470.
