Leland R. Hall
Leland R. Hall was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Criterion, Ore., to John Hall and Elsie Fry Hall. He was the 10th of their 11 children. He passed away Dec. 18, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif.

He attended high school in Waldport, Ore., and on Sept. 15, 1940, he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, which later became known as the U.S. 41st Infantry Division.

During World War II, he saw battle in the New Guinea Campaign, Hollandia Attack, and Battle of Salamaua as a technical sergeant. Leland earned the Silver Star during the Battle for Roosevelt Ridge in Papua, New Guinea. In addition, he received the Bronze Star for action in the Southern Philippines and Luzon, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon and the Purple Heart. He was given a field promotion to second lieutenant, Company C 84th Infantry Advanced Training Battalion, and sent to Australia for Officers Candidate School. Leland was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor.

When the war ended, Leland returned to Waldport, and in 1945 he met Betty Strickler of Toledo, Ore. They were married in 1946 and in 1951 they relocated to Crescent City.

He worked in the commercial fishing industry but eventually became a butcher in Del Norte and Curry counties. In 1975, the couple moved to Brookings.

Leland was a baseball coach for Babe Ruth and American Legion teams. He coached in both Crescent City and Brookings for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife Betty; sons Dane and Mark, both of Crescent City, and Dale and Lee, both of Brookings; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Clifford of Newport and Lester of Yachats.

The family is honoring his request that there be no memorial services.
