Larry Nicholson
Larry Nicholson, loving husband, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, of natural causes at the age of 71. 

Larry was born  March 18, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Merrill and Dorothy Maland. 

He moved to California in 1943 and settled in Crescent City, where he lived until the age of 17. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1959 and served proudly for seven and a half years. He fought in Vietnam, earned two purple hearts and was sent home with an honorable discharge due to his injuries. 

Shortly after his discharge he went to work for the Operating Engineers, Local 3 in San Jose, Calif., where he was a proud member of his union for 42 years. When he was injured on the job, he retired and moved to Oregon. 

He and his wife lived in Brookings from 1994 until 2005, when they moved to Coos Bay. They lived in Coos Bay for seven years before moving back to Brookings and buying a home. He belonged to Brookings Elks Lodge 1934.

Larry leaves behind his wife June; daughters Lisa Troxell and Wendy Sanford; brothers Steve Nicholson and his wife Maribel, John Nicholson and his wife Pat; stepdaughters Susan Sandstrom, and Nancy Rezendes; stepsons Lon Wheelock and his wife Linda, Mike Rezendes, Stephen Rezendes and his wife Renee; sons-in law Jim Sanford and  Randy Troxell;  uncles Don Maland and Dave Rosensteel; aunts Barbara Rosensteel and Ruth Maland; grandsons Darren, Zachary, Austin, Seth, Mike, Royce, Joey, Raymond, and Matthew; granddaughters Abbey, Carolyn, Jennifer, and Aimee. He also leaves behind many much-loved nephews, nieces and cousins.

There will be a celebration of life at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at  Brookings Elks Lodge, 800 Elk Drive, Brookings. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ASPCA or the National Cancer Society.
