John Peterson, 97, Canyon-ville, died Aug. 8, 2001.
He was born in Sweden November 1903 to Lok Per and Marten Anna (Persotter) Persson.
He arrived in America in 1919 and changed his name to Peterson. In 1947 he married Rose Kelly and they moved to Brookings where they lived until 1985. In Brookings, John and Rose started Quick Aid, an organization which provided assistance to the people of Brookings.
Mr. Peterson was a member of Gateway Masonic Lodge 175 A.F. & A.M., Warrenton, and a 50-year member of Satellite Chapter 165 Order of Eastern Star, Brookings.
Survivors are daughter, Jean Laurance of Canyonville and son, Patrick Barkley of Tabuco Canyon, Calif.; grandchildren, Jill McGregor and husband Don of Dillard, Jack Laurance of Roseburg, Mary Boisvert of Canyonville, LeAnn, Regina, Brian and Patricia Barkley, all of Southern California; niece, Margaret Slagle of Portland, and nephew, Dr. Elmo Peterson of Missoula, Mont.
Also surviving are four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Monday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens, 965 West Harvard Ave., Roseburg.
Pastor Stacy Hance will officiate.
