John Lansdowne Smart

Feb. 17, 1922-June 28, 2014

At 92 years of age, and after a good, long life, John L. Smart went home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2014.

His body will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery with Military Honors as a 34-year veteran of World War II, Korean, and Vietnam wars, serving in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. The ceremony will take place at noon on July 11, 2014. There will also be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on July 12, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bend.

John was born Feb. 17, 1922, in North Vancouver, Canada, to Arthur William and Leah Lansdowne Smart. He grew up in Los Angeles during the depression.

After graduating from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he joined the U.S. Navy. He returned from World War II, and married Patricia Fay Gaffney.

After the Korean War, John attended San Francisco Theological Seminary. Upon graduation he became a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Maine, Korea, Illinois, California, Turkey, Nevada, Okinawa, North Dakota, Florida and Germany.

Upon retirement he moved to Lake Helen, Florida, and had the privilege of being the town’s mayor for more than 10 years. An avid organ enthusiast, he acquired a Wurlitzer theater pipe organ. He enjoyed sharing his love of the pipe organ with others and opened his Victorian home for several organ concerts and benefits during the 20 years he lived in Lake Helen.

In 2001 he moved to Oregon, living on the coast in Brookings, before moving to Bend in 2006.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers Wesley and Robert Smart.

Survivors include his three sisters: Peggy Moody, Gwen Keene, and Betty Muldoon, all of California; his oldest daughter Jenny McGuire of Westlake Village, California, and her two daughters Dawn and Joy McGuire of Washington; his youngest daughter and son-in-law Jana Smart Greenshield and Buddy Greenshield and their two daughters, Jessika and Jodi Greenshield, of Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Submitted by Baird Funeral Home of Bend.
