Joan (Joann) Francis Patterson

Joan Patterson, 83, of Wala Wala, Wash., passed away Jan. 31, 2013, at her home.

Joan was born in Hudson, Mass., to John Patrick Gately and Emily Francis McAllister Gately. 

She pursued a career in nursing, earning a registered nursing degree from the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, and a master’s degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. 

She worked and taught nursing in Salt Lake City. Later, she worked for the Veterans Administration hospitals in Utah, Illinois, and Walla Walla for the 19 years before she retired. 

Joan loved to travel and enjoyed history. 

She is survived by her sisters Mary Sprouse of Salt Lake City, Kathleen Erickson of Murray, Utah, Barbara Barthel of Lompoc, Calif., Beverly Pillivant of Los Alamitos, Calif., Peggy Peterson of Riverdale, Utah, Sandra Sherer of Colfax, Calif., and Carol Mizer of Mansfield, Texas; brothers John F. Gately of Sandy, Utah, Robert Gately of Placerville, Calif.; children Deborah King of Brookings, John Patterson of Mukilteo, Wash., Susan Patterson Hussey of Wala Wala; grandchildren Brad Jensen, Anna Hobson Sabatine, Ryan Jensen, Mindy Walker, Stephen Patterson, Maygen Phillips, Katy Hussey, Danial Hussey, Dereck Patterson, and Maranda Patterson; great-grandchildren Trystan Walker, Brianna Walker, Jacob Sabatine, and Josephyna Sanenz, Dylan Jensen, Rylee Jensen, and Zachary Jensen.  

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sister Marjorie Clark and daughter Rita Jensen Abrams. 

Joan was loved and will be missed, but not forgotten by her family and friends. 

At her request, no service is planned.
