James Orville Reuss

James Orville Reuss, 85, Smith River, died May 2, 2002.

He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

He served in World War II in Burma, India and China, and helped build the Lido Road, also known as the Stillwell Road.

He was a master mechanic and worked 23 years for Simonson Lumber Co. and Diebolds Mill in Smith River where he was severely injured and forced to retire on a disability.

He was a long-time resident of Smith River and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 712, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Brookings Elks Lodge, 1934.

Survivors include wife, Marian Reuss of Smith River; former wife of many years, Ramona Reuss; brother, Robert F. Reuss of Smith River; sisters, Elsie Ladd of Copperopolus, Calif.; Louise Rice of Decatur, Ill.; daughter, Barbara Stamps of Eureka, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Sharon and Tony Luis Jr. of Smith River; Virginia Bennett of Tower Hill, Ill.; Carol and Howard Schauerman of Crescent City; Sally Kotter of Smith River; Ernie and Tina Burnham, Curtis Burnham, Eddie Burnham and Prince Furlow, all of Aurora.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Trisha and Sean O'Haire of Penngrove, Calif.; Traci and Kanoa Rosado of Petaluma, Calif.;

David J. Kettlewell, Ellie, Megan and Sam Schauerman, Kristina and Jordan Grimes, all of Crescent City; Jesse Stamps of Los Angeles; Echo, Brooke, Raymond, John, Michael and Jeffrey Burnham, Sarah and Renee Furlow, all of Aurora. Eric Engle of Carson City, Nev.; great-grandson, Brad Thomas O'Haire and great-granddaughter,Naya Kai'ili Rosado.

Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, Sharron Furlow and Paulene Reuss.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge in Brookings.
