Howard Tanoak Smith

Howard Tanoak Smith, 82, Springfield, died April 22, 2001.

He was born May 9, 1918, in Jackson County, N.C., to Curtis and Alcie Mull Smith.

He married Naomi Krahn in North Carolina on Oct. 31, 1942. They later divorced.

He lived in Sweet Home until 1958, then moved to the Gold Beach area.

After retiring, he returned to North Carolina and lived there for 10 years before moving to the Eugene-Springfield area in the 1980s.

He worked as a timberfaller in Sweet Home and on the Southern Oregon Coast.

Survivors are daughters June Allen of North Bend; Peggy Adams of Gold Beach; Sharon Epperson of Bandon; brothers Edgar Smith of Brevard, N.C.; Berlin Smith of Sweet Home, John Smith of Lebanon; sisters Winnie Mull of Springfield and Elsie Brown of Dallas.

Also surviving are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
