Herbert E. “Herb” Fritz, 87, of Brookings, passed away April 4, 2013, in Crescent City.
Herb was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Ft. Collins, Colo., to Ernest and Hazel (Pease) Fritz.
He joined the U.S. Navy Dec. 2, 1943, and served in World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1946.
Herb moved to Brookings in 1948. He met Erma Meyers and they were married June 7, 1951, in Brookings.
Herb worked in Brookings in the local lumber industry until 1951, when he began what would be a 35-year career as a driver with Consolidated Freightways.
Herb and Erma raised four children in Brookings. He enjoyed traveling, including returning to Colorado and going on cruises. He also enjoyed taking walks.
Herb was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife Erma Fritz of Brookings; children Donna Herrick and her husband Leo of San Jose, Calif., Darrell Whirry and his wife Beth of Brookings, Doreen Harrell and her husband Allen of Brookings, and Bill Fritz and his wife Judy of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; sister Patricia Montgomery of Ft. Collins, Colo.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, a brother, and grandchild Jeremiah Harrell.
A private family graveside service and interment will be at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings.
