In Loving Memory
Helen Grace Botnen peacefully passed April 14, 2014, at her daughter’s home in Brookings.
She was born Nov. 25, 1920, to Robert Leder and Millie Hayes-Leder in Drake, N.D.
Helen moved to San Diego in 1940 where she worked for Western Union. She met her husband Karl in Hollywood, Calif. Together they celebrated 50 years of marriage.
After moving to Sparks, Nev., in 1965, she worked for Saint Mary’s Hospital as a nurse’s aide in geriatrics until her retirement.
She moved to Brookings in 2001 to be close to family. She lived at Sea View Senior Living where she enjoyed many friends and activities.
Helen was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed writing poetry, reading, walking, and traveling as well as her rose garden and her dogs.
Mom, we will always cherish your enthusiasm for life and wonderful sense of humor. The world has been a better place since your arrival and will remain improved because of your 93 years of loving kindness and good deeds. God speed sweet angel; you’ve earned your wings.
Helen is survived by her sister Joyce Graff of Stanley N.D.; daughters and sons-in-law Mikki and Terry Pate of Brookings, Kathi and Ron Kenedi of Nevada City, Calif.; granddaughters Mandy Thom and Christina Botnen, both from Sparks; grandsons Jason Botnen and Tommy Botnen of Sparks, Dustin Read of Grass Valley, Calif. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Karl O. Botnen Jr.; sons Michael Botnen and Daniel Botnen; grandsons Randy Pate, Ricky Carl and Branden Botnen; granddaughter Melissa Read; brothers Harold Leder, Oliver Leder and William Leder.
A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.
