Garth Steinaker Leavens, 86, Brookings, died Sept. 21, 2001, in Brookings following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 19, 1915, in Chicago to Miles and Elfrieda Leavens.
He attended school in Illinois and California, and graduated from University of Southern California. He served in the Navy in World War II, worked as a probation officer for Ventura County and a parole agent for the California Department of Corrections.
He married Helen Bodden in 1974, and lived in Northern Idaho and Sequim, Wash., before moving to Brookings in 1986.
He enjoyed the outdoors and gardening, and loved pets and rural animals. He was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed classical music.
Mr. Leavens competed successfully in chess tournaments throughout the United States. He was a member of the Port Angeles Chess Club and became an active member of the Brookings Chess Club.
Survivors are his wife of Brookings; sons and daughters-in-laws, Garey and Jenny Leavens of Roseburg, Weston and Jenny Leavens of Sebastopol, Calif., Drew Leavens of Poway, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Michael Sully of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In accordance with Mr. Leavens wishes, there will be no service.
