Fred Baumgartner passed away Friday night Aug. 9, 2013, at his longtime home up the Chetco River.

A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15,  at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St., in Brookings. 

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Brookings Church of Christ, 17222 Passley Road, Michael Wilk officiating. 

A finger-food potluck reception will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the family home, 99616 North Bank Chetco River Road.

Fred was born Dec. 7, 1921, and was a lifelong resident of Brookings.

During World War II, Fred served three and a half years as a U.S. Navy pharmacist mate first class and fought in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam, attached to the 3rd Marine Division in Company E, Third Medical Battalion.

Following his military service, Fred worked long and hard hours as a timber faller and commercial fisherman.

He loved hunting and fishing; and he loved helping others, especially seniors.

Fred will be missed by everyone who has known him over the years.

He leaves behind Rosie, his beloved wife of 64 years; daughter Susan Smith and husband Jim of The Dalles; son Fred Owen Baumgartner and wife Cathie of Elko, Nev.; sisters Marie Musser of Brookings and Louise Looke of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren Jimmy, Darci, Julie, Jesse, Eileen, Jeff, Greg, and Alison. Also surviving are 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by brother Nick Baumgartner; and sisters Alvina Ripley and Freeda Kemnitzer.  Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
