Frances Ellen Woodhouse Guthridge, 67, of Brookings, passed away Oct. 8, 2012, in Billings, Mont.
She was born May 14, 1945, in Glendive, Mont., the second of five daughters, to Roland and Evelyn Woodhouse.
Francie knew from the beginning that her calling in life was to be a nurse, and she pursued her career dreams starting with attending classes in nursing at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., earning her diploma in Nursing from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Billings. Later she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a family nurse practitioner certificate, and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Washington.
Francie served her patients throughout the years as a staff nurse, community health nurse, pediatric nurse, obstetrics nurse, county health officer, and family nurse practitioner. She valued continuing education in order to keep up in her field and aided others pursuing her beloved profession by serving as an assistant professor at Carroll College, as preceptor at Montana State University, and a clinical faculty member at Gonzaga University. She realized her most precious dream twice: That dream was to own her own family health clinic: Strawberry Mountain Health Care in Helena, and later Azalea Family Health Care in Brookings.
She gave so much to her profession, including serving as treasurer and secretary of the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon, and as a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association. Over the years, Francie was honored with many awards for her unselfish work in the medical field. Some of them include: Montana Nurses’ Association Award for work in the area of continuing education, Award for Excellence from the Montana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse of the Year, and the Leadership Fellowship Award from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in Washington, D.C.
Francie met and married Peter Guthridge of Eureka, Calif., when she was there serving as a public health nurse in 1969. They had two children, son Aidan and daughter Kiele. Francie was enamored with her three grandsons Andrew, Owen, and Evan, who are the children of Aidan and Kalin Guthridge.
Francie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Francie is survived by her son, his wife and their three sons; her daughter; and sisters Joyce Woodhouse of Henderson, Nev., Cheryl Duncan of Maple Valley, Wash., Berdine Woodhouse of Henderson, and Claudia Howard of Havre, Mont.
Her favorite activities and interests were family events especially holiday dinners, reading, knitting, cross stitch, gardening, sharing her favorite hiking trails with Kiele and her sisters, and shopping for her grandsons, just to name a few. After a valiant fight with glioblastoma, Francie has moved on to a new and better place. The Woodhouse and Guthridge families and the patients she served for so many years have lost a truly dedicated family member and medical provider. We will all miss her dearly. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of RiverStone Hospice Home for the wonderful care they gave Francie and the family.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct.11, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, in Billings. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 12, alongside her husband at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber, Mont.
Memorial donations may be made to the Special K Ranch, where Kiele resides, P.O. Box 479, Columbus, MT. 59019.
