Edward Andrew Johnsen, 80, Brookings, died July 10, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Chicago, to Andrew and Julia (Ceiniarska) Waligora. On June 30, 1930, he was adopted by William and Julia Ceiniarska) Johnsen.
He was raised and educated in the Chicago area graduating from Hammond High School. He then attended a vocational school in Chicago for 18 months.
Mr. Johnsen served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from August 1942 to June 1946. He also served in the Korean War.
He received the Victory Ribbon, American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Point System and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
He married Viola Jean Federoff June 30, 1946, in Oak Park, Ill. They lived in Schererville, Ind., where they were in business selling firewood.
Mr. Johnsen retired in 1981 and he and his wife moved to Brookings in May of this year.
He was a member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Schererville, Ind., a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6448 and the Moose Lodge. He received the Buddy Poppy Award from the VFW.
He enjoyed his family, health, nature, animals and landscaping.
Survivors are wife Viola, Brookings; son Edward Andrew Johnsen, Jr., Schererville, Ind.; daughters and sons-in-law Karyn and James Dagenais, Brookings; Debra and Ken Bear, Aiken, S.C.; Janet and Hector Sanchez, Portage, Ind.; Nancy Johnsen, Gary, Ind.; Jennifer Whitten, Portage, Ind.; sister-in-law Wendy Johnsen, Highland, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Bernard.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Northwest Indiana.
