Darlene T. Lansing, 87, of Brookings, passed away July 9, 2012, in Crescent City.
Darlene was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Hinton and Thelma Ellis. She grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from high school and junior college. She was a hairdresser in her earlier years, and worked at Hughes Aircraft in later years.
She met the love of her life, Ron Lansing, while playing volleyball in Hermosa Beach, Calif. In 1943, at age 18, Darlene took a five-day train trip to get married to Ron in Bennettsville, S.C. The war was on and as it has been said, the war is harder on the ones left at home. Darlene had it double with her husband Ron serving in combat as a paratrooper in Europe and then her son Mike serving in combat with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. Both Darlene’s husband Ron and son Mike chose the dangerous job of being L.A. city firefighters and with the support of Darlene her two men came through it all; their lives were spared.
Darlene and Ron would have soon celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. For Ron, this was 70 years with the most wonderful woman in the world.
During the war, Darlene worked at Hughes Aircraft, helping build vehicles for the war. When the war was over Darlene and Ron started a family in 1946. Darlene grew up camping and trout fishing in the Mammoth Mountains and continued to do this with Ron and the kids. In 1953, Darlene and Ron moved to a small beach town, Playa del Rey, Calif., and spent a lot of time on the beach. They taught the kids to body surf and love the ocean. Darlene played on a volleyball team in her young adult years and later loved to golf.
Darlene and Ron moved to Brookings in 1981 to be with family. Darlene loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and supported them in all of their interests and activities. She loved watching football and more recently NASCAR with her grandson; she was a true sports enthusiast.
Darlene was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was hardworking, honest and forthright. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
Darlene is survived by her husband Ron of Brookings; daughter Linda Overlin of Brookings; son Mike Lansing and wife Julie of Playa del Rey, Calif.; grandchildren Tiffany Eldridge of Brookings, Josh Overlin and wife Ember of Brookings, Matt Overlin and wife Amy of Monmouth, Diego Benatina of Playa del Rey; great-grandchildren Hannah Fallert, Phoebe Eldridge, Jadyn Overlin, Carver Overlin, Demi Overlin, Ozzy Overlin; her cousin Barbara Byrne of Long Beach, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
The family gathered together on the Winchuck River for a time of remembering the most wonderful woman in their lives and celebrated her going to heaven.
